CASE STUDY
BriannaâDeveloping Conduct Problems
BRIANNA IS A TWELVE-YEAR-OLD who lives at home with her parents and younger brother. She attends seventh grade at a local public high school. She has never been held back or failed, and she is an AâB student. Brianna has had no major behavioral problems at school. There is no family history of mental illness, substance abuse, or medical problems.
In the past year, Briannaâs parents noticed that she has been more withdrawn at home. She says little spontaneously to her family and often seems irritated when they ask her questions. Brianna often tells her family to mind their own business and respect her privacy. Her parents describe her as being more moody, and her brother says she is not as nice to him as she used to be. Brianna feels as if they are overreacting and finds her family to be annoying. Her parents are concerned that she is becoming a negative role model for her younger brother.
Brianna has kept up with all of her usual friends, whom her parents feel are good kids. She still enjoys school and is still active in the school drama club. When her parents asked her teachers whether she appeared any different to people at school, they all reported she seemed like âthe same old Brianna.â This response concerned her parents as they feel she has more of an attitude with them and her younger brother. As Briannaâs parents confronted her more on the changes in behavior at home, Brianna became progressively angrier with them. She began to refuse to do household chores and stated her parents should hire a maid if they need help around the house. She started to refuse to come home on time after school, saying she had a right to hang out with her friends and that her parents should just get over it. She also began to refuse going to church with her family, reporting she no longer believed in organized religion and that her parents could not control her beliefs.
